Let’s Talk About School Vouchers

School Vouchers are a 10 year systematic re-segregation and privatization of our NC Public Schools Disguised as the “Opportunity Scholarship Grant Program”.

Let’s Talk About It!

The program was initially designed for low-income families to opt out of their local public school, but starting in the 2024-2025 school year, there are no income eligibility requirements.

In 2014-2015 73% of voucher recipients identified as non-white minorities. By 2022-2023 only 31% were awarded to non-white minorities

In 2022-2023 a total of 25,568 recipients for a total cost of $134 million in NC state dollars that was diverted from our statewide public school budget. 88.83% of those voucher dollars went to religious schools.

The state now allocates $1,000,000 per year just for marketing of these vouchers.

Many Private Schools legally discriminate based on religion, disability, gender, LGBTQ+ identity, academics, and lifestyle.

Voucher programs divert tax dollars to largely unregulated private entities with limited accountability.

There is no evidence that Vouchers improve student outcomes. NC requires no measures of student achievement.

Private schools have no requirements for accreditation, curriculum, or teacher certification, and are not required to provide transportation, English language instruction or special education services.

It is so important that we educate ourselves about the true nature of these school vouchers and recognize the inherent risks associated with diverting funding from public education.

As your representative in Raleigh, I will be committed to advocating for policies that prioritize equitable access to quality education for all students. Rest assured, I will continue to fight against measures that undermine the integrity of our public education system and perpetuate disparities in opportunity.

Together, let’s work towards a future where every child has the chance to thrive in a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
